Video games, we’ve been playing them for years (for some, all our lives). When I think about video game progression I tend to ponder four things: story, gameplay, graphics, and music. Music and sound effects are a large portion of the experience and enjoyment of playing. Like how music affects different scenes in movies. Imagine taking music out of Star Wars, Halloween or even Hitchcock’s original Psycho; it just wouldn’t be the same. Video games are just like movies, we need a soundtrack to help the story flow and unconsciously guide our emotions.

What would saving the princess, collecting the triforce, or discovering the secret of Myst be without their classic soundtracks? Music is an absolute necessity. Now you can impress this upon your children with the Blu-ray/DVD of Video Games Live: Level 2. A touring concert and PBS special, Video Games Live blends together live orchestral performances with real footage from the games themselves. Throw in a little laser light show and you have yourself the greatest homage to video game music ever.

This 280 minute feature contains music and footage from Dragon’s Lair, Tetris, Halo, Civilization IV, StarCraft II, Sonic the Hedgehog, Advent, Rising, World of Warcraft, Chrono Cross, Mass Effect, Megaman, Myst, Zelda, Super Mario Bros, Castlevania and more.

Pro-Tip: If you’ve never seen this ACapella version of several video games then you need to watch the video below.
