Ah, adolescence. A magical time of new experiences, new changes, and new… body odor. If your preteen boy isn’t the type to pick up a spray can of Axe (please don’t let him, ever), or your teen girl doesn’t want to smell like the essence of Katy Perry or Nicki Minaj, there are several unique options available thanks to the wonders of the Internet.
Here are five nerdy, distinctive colognes and perfumes for your adolescent’s first forays into fragrance – and you might find something you like as well.
1. It All Adds Up (Avon)
You can’t get nerdier than a cologne bottle shaped like a calculator from the 1980s. If your preteen or teen is looking for a one-of-a-kind, vintage smell that harkens back to the days of Revenge of the Nerds, you can still find the “Deep Woods After Shave” housed inside the decanter on eBay, Etsy, and elsewhere.
2. Stan Lee’s Signature Cologne
When a young man wants to smell like The Man, look no further for just the right scent for him: Stan Lee’s Signature Cologne. JADS International has a variety of colognes based on superheroes, but Stan Lee lives a real life larger than any fictional hero.
And just what is the aroma of Stan “The Man” Lee? JADS describes it as “crisp blends of bergamot, ginger, white pepper, basil, and violet layered in with accords of cedar, vetiver and musk.” Excelsior!
JADS International also offered Tiberius, cologne inspired by the inimitable Captain James T. Kirk. If your teen loved Star Trek Into Darkness, or (even better) the original series of Star Trek, this might be the perfect starter cologne for a young man who likes to boldly go.
The description indicates “citron, black pepper, and cedar create refreshingly clear top notes, layered over warm vanilla, white musk and sandalwood base notes.” Although the fragrance has been discontinued, you can find Tiberius and other Star Trek themed colognes still for sale on eBay.
4. Hermione Granger
No one is a nerd like Hermione Granger. Smart, loyal, and brave, and now captured in a bottle in the Etsy shop Zeibee’s Multifarious Concoctions.
This eau de Hermione sounds like the perfect scent for a girl’s first perfume, with “warm rose, freshcut grass, a bite of cinnamon and clove, and the faintest hint of lavender.” Harry Potter fanatics will remember that one of the odors that Hermione smells in the Felix Felicis luck potion is mowed grass, which makes those aromas a fitting concoction for bottling Hermione’s essence.
5. Paper Passion
If Hermione had to pick a fragrance for herself, though, I would bet 10 Galleons it would be Paper Passion from Steidl. Crafted to capture “freshly printed books in a bottle,” the scent seems well-suited to young nerds who love to while away their hours inside the comforting walls of a library.
They may prefer just taking a whiff from the bottle now and then rather than smelling like a walking newspaper press, but with Paper Passion no one will deny your child is unique.
