There are a lot of stories that are widely regarded as essential to the development of a good geek: the battle between the Light side and the Dark side of the Force, the journey of the Fellowship of the Ring to Mordor, the adventures of a bold and compassionate crew through the final frontier. The time has come to add another saga to the list: that of the last Airbender, the child who had to master the four elements and save the world in a matter of months.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is a comically goofy and yet intensely deep cartoon that spanned three seasons, called “Books,” on Nickelodeon. Chances are, your older geeklings already know and love it, and they’ll definitely know of the show’s recent sequel, The Legend of Korra. Now, you can get each Book of the original series on DVD so your geeklings can watch their favorite episodes again and again, and even introduce the next generation to Aang’s epic tale.
The first season box set, or Book 1: Water, includes all 20 episodes of the first season on five DVDs, plus a sixth disc full of behind-the-scenes featurettes that offer fans a glimpse inside the making of Avatar. There’s even commentary available for the pilot episode so you and your geeklings can get a deeper look into the beginning of what turned out to be a truly incredible story.
There’s a pretty great fanmade trailer for Avatar on YouTube. Check it out if you aren’t convinced yet:
