The 1980’s produced some of the best films for nerdy kids. It was a time when being nerdy, smart and a geek put you in the minority. We were the kids trampled by the dock shoe wearing rich jocks. A lot has changed in the last thirty-some odd years, kids today can relish in this new pop-nerd culture that has evolved. Still, those of us who are old enough to remember the 80’s remember the golden years of basking in the imagination of Jim Henson, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante and Frank Oz.
One of the most underrated gems to come from the 80’s is the Explorers. Starring Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix, this quasi-space adventure captures the spirit of being young and adventurous. The plot revolves around three boys who develop, a futuristic computer program that allows them to safely travel through space.
If your child loves aliens and space exploration then they’ll relate to this movie. I consider it required viewing for every 10 to 12 year old. You’ll love Ethan Hawke’s portrayal as Wolfgang, the junior computer scientist. . He’s like a young Egon from Ghostbusters. By now you’re probably wondering what do the three kids discover while cruising around space. You’ll have to watch the movie and find out.
