Love 1 Love

As a young and wild geek, you raced through your own dark cosmos from point of light to point of light: experimenting, building, reasoning, solving, writing, and generally being a fast-paced and unpredictable force for awesome in the world.
Then came that special someone and, as the saying goes, came love, marriage, and you pushing a baby carriage. Your velocity slowed and you started appearing in a regular orbit: a kid-centric orbit. Within the span of a few months, your entire life began to revolve around your kid or kids, and you’d become a part of a miniature solar system called “family.”
Not to belie the gravity of the situation, but Galileo Galilei is one of the most important figures in science, and interestingly, one of the most important figures in geek culture. Here’s a guy who knew, through careful research and calculation, that he was totally right about observed phenomena, went out and published his findings, and then found that the world at large was ready to burn him at the stake.
Moral of the story? It’s hard to be smart, and it’s hard to be a geek. Giving your kid a miniature stuffed version of Galileo might take some of the rough edge off.
