Now if I’m being honest, I can’t say that the little demons I’m raising have read the Hellboy comics by Mike Mignola or seen any of the movies (live-action or animated). We’re so square in my house that we’d probably refer to the gun-toting paranormal detective as “Heckboy” or maybe just his affectionate nickname “Red.”
However, that isn’t to say I’m not excited for the day when they’re ready, and this “Hellboy at Home” print by Kelly Denato makes that day feel just a little bit closer. Why? Because it accentuates Hellboy’s sensitive side! Recalling his portrayal by Ron Perlman in the Guillermo del Toro films, Hellboy is shown draped sideways over a comfortable chair with a cute and cuddly clowder – which is to say, a group of cats! His signature oversized revolver is nowhere to be seen, replaced by knitting needles and a basketful of yarn. Though the kittens seem to be interfering more than helping, Hellboy still looks happy to be honoring their likeness on a sweater. That’s a “heck” of a lot kid-friendlier than Alf, who’d be more inclined to eat them! In fact, there’s not a smidgeon of menace or monsters or cultist magic, making this an appropriate addition to your own little monsters’ room. Maybe it will encourage them to tame their own wild side!
