In a long list of women who rock (Courtney Love, Wendy O’ Williams, Kathleen Hanna, Siouxsie Sioux, Joan Jett, Cherri Curri, Nancy Wilson, Lita Ford, Poly Styrene, The Go Gos, all the chicks from L7, Cyndi Lauper, Grace Slick, and others), Jem aka Jerrica Benton of Jem and the Holograms deserves a coveted spot on this list, despite her being an 80s cartoon. She still rocked anyway. We watched Jem for years in her battle against those terrible Misfits brats who never gave her a fair break, and were always stealing her band’s equipment out of sheer determination to win a battle of the bands and a gargantuan-sized mansion. We cheered her on and applauded her determination, even as she was simultaneously battling that nincompoop, Eric, who was always trying to take Starlight Music (the music company Jem’s father left her after he died).
After over 60 episodes and three years of following the lives of the Holograms, watching their journey from one adventure to the next, we grew as kids who loved music, to understand that being in a band is sometimes not as easy as we might have thought it was. Given what Jem endured, you have to wonder if she would do it all over again, or perhaps sell the company to evil, corporate warlords and go on with life as a happy-go-lucky teen, instead. Yeah, pretty nerdy question, right?
Nerdy music kids born after the magical time of the 80’s, when cartoons were life and G.I. Joe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were a REALLY big deal, have a chance to experience the epicness of Jem’s holographic adventures with “The Truly Outrageous Complete Series” DVD box-set. It includes every Jem episode, featurettes, interviews with the cast, a video jukebox, and original toy commercials (cause, obviously, Jem and her cohorts were made into dolls and marketed and sold in toy stores, all to Barbie’s dismay, of course). So stop wasting your time and turn your kid into a Hologram fan today. When they become rock stars with gargantuan mansions and compassionate hearts, they’ll thank you for it greatly.
