The video below is an abridged version of one of the most lauded episodes in one of the most groundbreaking cartoons of all time, “Heart of Ice” from the first season of Batman: The Animated Series. Thanks to Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, Mr. Freeze finally had a backstory, one worthy of an Emmy and a comic book resurrection — not to mention audience sympathies. It was revealed that Mr. Freeze was not motivated by greed or insanity like the rest of the rogues gallery, but, like Batman himself, by tragedy and revenge. Though his methods still put him on the wrong side of the law, one could almost accept him as an anti-hero instead of a villain.
Like every comic book character, Mr. Freeze has undergone a numerous redesigns over the years. The BTAS version, specially designed by comic mogul Mike Mignola (Hellboy), is easy to recognize as the highpoint, while Arnold Schwarzenegger’s campy, pun-spouting portrayal in the 1997 film Batman & Robin is about as low as it gets.
Fortunately, this white cotton t-shirt, available in various sizes, most resembles the latter and not the former. Mr. Freeze’s signature red goggles are most telling, staring out from the otherwise blue graphic like the character’s own snowblind rage. Thankfully, he lacks the white hair patch of the recent New 52 interpretation. It’s more likely your kids know Freeze from the Imaginext toy line, the Lego Batman videogames or even Arkham Asylum (my personal favorite incarnation). This shirt does them all justice, and puts the tragic villain close to any fan’s own heart of ice.
