Sonic the Hedgehog: 3’3”, 77 lbs. Has a posse.
Anyone who spent any time around video games in the early ‘90s will remember Sega’s mascot, Sonic The Hedgehog. This short, blindingly fast ball of blue spikes was Sega’s edgy counter to Nintendo’s comparatively slow and pudgy plumber, Mario. Sonic, of course, wasn’t alone in his adventures against the evil Dr. Robotnik. Both of his one-time enemies, Shadow the Hedgehog and Knuckles the Echidna, teamed up with him from time to time to help save the world.
Sonic is an iconic figure that just drips the cool, bad-boy troublemakers of the early ‘90s. He had good company with the likes of 7-Up’s Cool Spot and Bart Simpson. Sonic also represents the early console wars between Nintendo and Sega, during which many of us as young teens firmly sided with one camp or the other to defend to the death the merits of our preferred systems. Today’s modern arguments of XBox 360 versus Playstation 3 are mere echoes of this ancient struggle.
Now, you can dress you own budding video game connoisseur in some vintage iconography. This t-shirt features a colorful illustration of Sonic with Knuckles and Shadow over a dark gray backdrop. Their menacing pose shows they’re back in style in all of their nostalgia-drenched glory and early ‘90s attitude. The next time you hear your kids arguing about which console is the best, dress them in this t-shirt, and teach them about their roots.
