If you’re looking for an offbeat cartoon series to get the kids’ sense of humor just as weird and quirky as your own, look no further than The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. Move over, SpongeBob. We’ve found something even more thrilling than your pineapple house and your pet snail, Gary.
The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, as you might remember, is an Emmy-award winning cartoon series, created by Thurop Van Orman (he’s been a storyboard artist for he Powerpuff Girls). The series revolves around Flapjack and Cap’n K’nuckles, as well as a talking whale (what else?) named Bubbie. The storyline, you ask? CANDY! You see, Flapjack is brought up by Bubbie, and after rescuing Cap’n K’nuckles one day, he tells them of a place known as Candied Island, which is made of nothing but candy. Think Flapjack and Bubbie are going to live their lives without trying to find this sweet paradise? Well, no. There wouldn’t be a series without “misadventures.”
There’s a bunch of strange characters in the series (stranger than the characters you see on the subway on a Saturday night), such as Peppermint Larry (who has made a woman out of candy and named her Candy Wife), certified candyologist Doctor Barber, villain Eight-Armed Willy, and many more. Kids love the absolute weirdness of the series and adults love the jokes only they can get. We recommend this cartoon for kids aged 8 and above, only because the younger ones won’t appreciate the awesomeness of such a masterpiece.
